Sexy Shoes

Sexy Shoes, originally uploaded by _saturnine.

Shoes by Rocket Dog, a brand I have steadily fallen in love with over the last year. There are some hit or miss designs (eg: I don't like any of the faux worn trainers), but they wear well and fit great, even on my extra-wide feet. When it comes to suppliers, stu2109 on eBay (UK based) is where I go to spend my money. Now... to actually stop spending my money on these shoes.

  • A Brassy Side to London's Muck by Clare Davidson. A report into night workers: "Unlike some night work, which happens in seclusion, rubbish collection is public. But that comes with its own risks. The pair know to stay alert, to avoid the drunken punch ups that can erupt without warning. Mark was threatened only three weeks ago around two o'clock in the morning, behind Leicester Square. But generally people are good humoured, adds Neil, the tireless optimist."
  • The Periodic Table of Cleaning, a ridiculously easy chart to read of things that you should be doing weekly, monthly and yearly around the home. I always wanted one of these.

Rupert Murdoch

From BBC News, Rupert Murdoch's influence over his corporation:

Mr Murdoch said Sky News could become "a proper alternative to the BBC" if it acted more like his US Fox News station. He stated that the only reason that Sky News was not more like Fox News was that 'nobody at Sky listens to me', the minutes read.
Terrifying. Just terrifying.

  • YouTube: End Petlessness, a public service announcement for the Oregan Humane Society. Again, another thing that made me tear up.
  • Candid Cameraman : "But the downside of shooting in this town is people; it's frustrating when they start giving me the evil eye if I so much as glance in their direction. You'd think folks working in areas frequented by tourists would be used to cameras and would make an attempt to be friendly, but by and large that's not the case."

Bristol Street Art Collected

This was really more of an excuse to try out Flickrslidr, but for anyone passing by with an interest in Bristol street art, here's a chance to look at what I've been doing for the last few months with my new camera:

Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.

[You can see my first set of Bristol Street Art here, and the original layout of the second one here. I highly suggest you listen to Gusset's new album Ask Dr. Kim whilst perusing this slideshow.]

[Other people who do the same (and do it better): knautia (uses a lot of different techniques), iyers, weirdoldhattie and Walt Jabsco - all recommended, 100%]

I killed a man.

Liam Gallagher calls Peter Andre a "fucking Paki cunt". Yeh, we don't have education issues in this country. Not one bit. Peter Andre is Greek/Australian, just for the record. Christ on a bike.

  • iPhone crowds? Don't believe the hype! The UK media tried their best to hype the iPhone launch, but it really wasn't as interesting the second time around, not when you've seen all the features already and you're paying out £200+ to be locked into a contract with O2.
  • DIY Speed Photography. I started looking at shutter speed (my camera goes up to 1/2000 I think) last week. It's ten times more fun than I thought it would be!

  • I hate to do this, because it's not going to help it stay online BUT: someone has split Wong Kar Wai's Chungking Express up into 11 pieces and uploaded it to Youtube. Part 1 is here, and you can easily find the rest of the pieces from there.
  • Deleted Thread, a quick and dirty blog linking to the deleted threads of Metafilter, along with reasoning from the admin. Not endorsed by them I bet, but not much community driven things are particularly frowned on over there.
  • Ink and Thunder is artist Becky Cloonan's blog. I know I am late to the party when it comes to the comic book world (even though hello? I am only 23!?) but I'm exploring and reading as much as I can now that I've got my toes wet.
  • Hooray! Hitotoki London is now open to submissions. One of these days I'll live in a major city that can warrant this kind of website, but until then, London will do. Who doesn't have stories about London?

  • BBC News: "Lyrical Terrorist" found guilty. There has to be more than this - writing poetry and owning books, regardless of subject, can't possibly be a crime. Can it?
  • BBC News: The Lost Art of Leftovers by Denise Winterman: "Youngsters don't seem to know anything about shopping. They don't even make a list, they just pluck whatever takes their fancy of the shelf. It just seems daft to me, you probably end up with a lot of food but nothing you can make a decent meal out of."

Good Copy, Bad Copy

Just finished watching Good Copy, Bad Copy, a freely available documentary about the current state of copyright. Standing at just over 58 minutes long, I went into the movie thinking it would be a borefest crammed with lectures and legalese. I was wrong, it was engaging, interesting and really quite relevant. Includes interviews with the guys from The Pirate Bay, Nigerian film makers, Brazilian remix artists and company representatives from organisations like the MPAA. The outlook is positive: yes change is coming, but it's change initiated by people who love creativity and are determined to create as a viable profession without restricting the freedoms of their audiences.

The only negatives predictably came from the suits, who didn't really seem to understand what is going on around them - one in particular saying that only a small minority of people give away their work, and they're lacking the ability to profit. It feels pointless to correct these old guys with the real living examples that contradict their assumptions, so I guess we're just going to have to wait for them to die off or something.

But overall, a positive, progressive film that gives me hope. We're going to topple this ancient beast of copyright being used for evil, and I don't think we'll have to kill ourselves to do it.

Bristol Art

So, Bristol museums have been awarded £5 million to acquire new art. The only time I've ever bothered with the Arnolfini, it was a whole lot of white space and not a lot of anything that was worth my time. Maybe I'll go back again sometime when I'm really really really bored. Maybe I won't.

Here's my proposal. Why not take £1 million of that lovely money, and make a few more legal graffiti walls in the city (because there are at least 5 places I can think of that would benefit from legalisation - and while we're at it, throw some cash at Workshop so they can get bigger premises and give me a job) instead of destroying the only real art that has grows up between our old streets?

Graffiti and related street art is where the talent and culture lie at the moment: you know it, I know it, that's the end of it. Yet with the exception of the overexposed Banksy, all the fatcats behind wooden doors in this city do is attempt to tear it all to pieces. I'm tired to the bones of having something I love be torn to pieces instead of approached in a positive light. Bring on some change already.
