"'The way we make films is very organic - it's not a product. It's not like saying, 'OK, we've finished a film and a film should be like this for ever.' I think some day we can go back and we can grow something out of it.' Projects cross-pollinate and, like collapsed trees in a forest feeding new growth, one film seems to fall through just so that others can sprout off it."

Bought on eBay for the amazing sum of 99p. Seems brand new (is nice and crisp), is handmade using recycled materials, and from Seattle nonetheless! You can check out more of their designs on their website - they have plenty of other wallets in various sizes, as well as clothes.

  • The AV Club interviewed Morgan Spurlock re: his new documentary "Where in the world is Osama Bin Laden": " I'm a registered independent, so my political views are kind of not in line with a lot of other cats. I think the biggest thing I wanted to do was just kind of let other people tell their stories. Kind of open up their world to us, and we'd listen. I think that's one of the biggest goals I had in making this movie, was listening to what other people had to say."

  • What will life be like in the year 2008?: "The housewife simply determines in advance her menus for the week, then slips prepackaged meals into the freezer and lets the automatic food utility do the rest. At preset times, each meal slides into the microwave oven and is cooked or thawed. The meal then is served on disposable plastic plates. These plates, as well as knives, forks and spoons of the same material, are so inexpensive they can be discarded after use." [via]
  • Anyone here been abused and wear a size 10?: "What these women looked like bore absolutely no relevance to the story, but even so I knew they had to be 'photogenic'. I thought I had done well, until I was told that I really shouldn't have included a size 14 in the group. Size 10 was the maximum."
  • Francois Dubeau (somewhat NSFW after clicking around) paints complex simplicity.
  • How children reacted to Mark Speight's death: "Heather, 12, from Dublin, wrote that she was shocked at the news: 'Oh no, not Mark! I loved him, he was the best! He seemed so happy. I'm so upset.' But plenty of adults managed to behave appallingly: "Parents were angry that a children's show should report the death at all and complained that it was "sick and appalling", according to the Daily Mail."

Had a long week temping... so harassing some fish with flash, shutter speed up high, on a Saturday morning is a good way to unwind... although I hope I didn't stress them out too much and find them dead tomorrow morning (they are not my pet!). These are not as edited as you think.

  • Football Stadium fire - I started laughing, thinking it would be a little fire that gave an excuse for the fans to go a bit nuts on the pitch and have a laugh and generally bring the LOLs. And very quickly became extremely horrified, watching the police doing their best to drag people on fire out of harms way. The fire spreads really quickly, and within 10 minutes the whole stand is on fire. 56 people died/450+ people injured - it was caused by someone dropping a match near a polysterene cup - most of the casualties coming from the stadium having locked exits.
  • Also interesting to note from the wikipedia entry is that this footage has been repeatedly removed from the internet because it's such a taboo subject. Why is this a good thing? Why aren't we allowed to see and learn about what happened? I'd never heard of this before. It would make so many people think twice about dropping lit matches/cigarettes on the floor.

Selling on eBay

I don't think anyone realises how much stuff creeps up on them over the years. When my parents divorced, I pretty much had a teddy bear and a few clothes and books salvaged, and everything else I own now has been accumulated since I was 10 years old. It's a little bit frightening. I have too many clothes I've never worn, too many books that I can't let emigrate with me. So to go with my Bookhopper escapades, I'm now beginning to eBay off a lot of clothes and miscellaneous items that can hopefully bring me a little bit of income while I'm painfully unemployed. This is what I have right now:

And I have lots more to go up - I have to wait until some things sell because of fees. Fingers crossed that this makes life easier both money-wise and clutter-wise.

  • In the name of Dov by Claire Salinda, a defence of American Apparel's advertising: "Naturally, I was waiting for the situation to turn into the opening scene from any basic porn flick, but Dov just offered me a Coke from his office fridge. I immediately began to dismiss the nasty rumors about him. He seemed just like any other dude who loves soda and hot girls, except he created the perfect T-shirt and he likes sex ... a lot. The Estate We're In

When I turn on the TV first thing in the morning my default channel is BBC1, so I can catch a bit of news while I do my morning routine - this week, they've been showing an excellent programme called Estate We're In about Silla Carron who, after managing to turn around her own, is now tackling another council estate, this time in Plymouth.

As an accompaniment to the series, the BBC have put up 10 ways to turn around a sink estate based on her methods. She really is brilliant, and the series exposes how difficult it is to make local councils face up to their responsibilities, how demoralised council estate tenants have become thanks to living in such squalor and how little changes (eg: doing door checks on your neighbours to test if they're letting strangers into the block of flats, having the playing areas fenced off and locked every night) can have a massive affect on the quality of life.

If you're in the UK, you can catch up with episodes on BBC iPlayer and airs at 9:15am. Unfortunately I can't find any clips on YouTube or the torrents for anyone else, sorry chaps.
